The Functional Safety Management (FSM) System of Pepperl+Fuchs has been evaluated successfully. Independent product test and assessment agency exida certified that all relevant requirements of IEC 61508:2010 for development of products with a SIL statement were met. Functional Safety Management means a set of methods that helps to prevent systematic errors in the design of products.
Thus, Pepperl+Fuchs fulfils the desire of customers to develop products according to this standard.
The following IEC 61508 objectives were subject to detailed auditing at Pepperl+Fuchs:
At Pepperl+Fuchs, the safety relevant parameters of a product are given in a way that respects the use within a safety loop. In many cases, the safety loop consists of a chain from sensor over interface modules, to DCS, and back to the field side over interface modules to actuators. The SIL level of a loop is based on a certain failure budget, and every component of a loop is allowed to take a certain share of this budget. All Pepperl+Fuchs products have a very low failure probability. SIL 2 modules within the Interface technology portfolio take such a small part of the failure budget that SIL 2 rated devices are also suitable for SIL 3 level.
Due to the high quality standards, Pepperl+Fuchs products only need a minimum share of the failure budget of the whole safety loop. They improve the safety of the plant significantly by exceeding the standards.
Less failure probability means more safety and gives customers maximum flexibility in their choice of other components of the safety loop.
