In this configuration, a gear set has been integrated in addition to the singleturn code disc. This gear set has been geared down and coded in such a way that up to 16,384 revolutions (14 bit) can be counted. Thus, the overall resolution is 16 bits (singleturn resolution) plus 14 bits (number of revolutions), or 30 bits total. Due to the high number (about a billion) of measuring steps this type of encoder can be used to divide very long linear distances into small measuring steps.
