Sensors and Interfaces for Integrated Industry 4.0—Pepperl+Fuchs at HANNOVER MESSE 2017

2017-05-09

With HANNOVER MESSE 2017 in the books, it's time for a summary: read more about the facts and highlights in our review …
Hannover Messe 2017: Summary of Events

This year’s HANNOVER MESSE once again solidified its status as the world’s leading industrial trade show. 6,500 exhibitors from more than 70 countries attracted over 225,000 professional visitors, leading to 5.6 million business contacts—impressive figures that attest to the heightened interest in technological progress being sparked by Industry 4.0. Pepperl+Fuchs also generated interest in the components and solutions for factory and process automation that the company presented at Hannover.

From field to cloud

With a special nod to this year’s motto “Integrated Industry”, Pepperl+Fuchs introduced a joint exhibit with partner companies Endress+Hauser, SAMSON, and SAP, demonstrating a fully networked production system. The panel showed a scenario where normally unused process and status data is communicated from the field level to the cloud and analyzed in line with the “predictive maintenance” concept.

Ethernet in hazardous areas

The ability to seamlessly integrate different field devices in one network- even in explosion-hazardous areas- was visualized by a panel showing the application of Ethernet in process automation. Due to the “Advanced Physical Layer,” which is being developed by Pepperl+Fuchs in cooperation with other companies, field devices will be connected directly in hazardous areas via 2-wire cables up to 200 m long. This direct Ethernet connection is almost 10,000 times faster than conventional HART technology. This allows device descriptions and documentation to be stored on the field devices while significantly more diagnostic data can be quickly transmitted from the field.

Beyond the physical layer

At the center of the Pepperl+Fuchs booth, an interactive exhibit with giant video screens inspired visitors with examples of Industry 4.0-compliant production in the automotive and process industries. The exhibit showed how various sensors and interface technologies create advantages at different stages of production by efficiently connecting the physical layer, data, and the cloud layer.

Next partner country: Mexico

Welcoming numerous exhibitors and visitors from this year's partner country Poland was a pleasure. Pepperl+Fuchs also enjoyed the visit of a delegation of Polish guests. Next year’s HANNOVER MESSE will take place from April 23 to 27 and Mexico will be the partner country.
