Pulse Ranging Technology (PRT)

Highly Accurate Positioning Over Large Distances

Capitalize on the excellent features of distance-based photoelectric sensors for your application, and gain that crucial competitive advantage in the market!

What Is PRT?

Pulse Ranging Technology (PRT) is currently the most precise industry-grade process for measuring distance. With this direct method of measurement, distances ranging from a few centimeters to several hundred meters are recorded to pinpoint accuracy.
Distance sensors equipped with Pulse Ranging Technology enable reliable and extremely precise measurements to be taken with great repeat accuracy and short response times—regardless of the ambient conditions and properties of the object.
What's more, the PRT sensors are extremely versatile. From distance sensors to high-end measurement technology, a host of different requirements can be met using the same method of measurement. PRT—technology that is setting new standards.

Pulse Ranging Technology

The Function Principle

With this method of measurement, a powerful light source emits short, high-energy pulses, which are reflected by the object and then recaptured by a light-sensitive receiver.

During this process, the emission and reception times are detected with a high degree of precision. From the values determined, the distance to the object is calculated using the runtime of the light pulses. If the object is close, the light propagation time is short. If the object is further away, the light propagation time is longer.

The Benefits of PRT Sensors

PRT Offers High Levels of Precision in Applications Ranging From a Few Millimeters to Several Hundred MetersSuccess at the speed of light—the superiority of this technology lies in the power density of the light pulses, which is 1000 times greater than in sensors with constant light sources. The benefits that this technology delivers include large measurement ranges, high detection ranges, and absolute levels of precision. Negative influences such as ambient light or different reflection characteristics cannot impact the function of PRT sensors. This makes PRT the technology for high-quality results.

Accuracy

  • Direct method of measurement delivering precise, reliable, and clear measurements
  • Greater accuracy over longer distances
  • No offset of the measured value during prolonged operation
  • Clear measurement result, even when several targets are present in the detection range

Immunity

  • High degree of immunity to ambient light
  • No mutual interference
  • Minimal susceptibility to changes in the measurement path caused by environmental influences
  • Reliable suppression of interfering influences such as dust or mist
  • Reliable blanking of objects in the distant background

Insensitivity

  • Little influence on the properties of the object, practically no black-white difference
  • Reliable operation, even in applications in the frozen storage sector at temperatures to -30 °C
  • Fully capable of detecting multiple targets, can be used in safety-critical applications
