Pepperl+Fuchs is expanding its portfolio of universal isolated barriers with the HiC2422 intrinsic safety barrier. The new module has two freely configurable channels for analog signals, which means it can be used both as a SMART transmitter power supply for two-wire transmitters and as a current driver for valve positioners. This dual functionality reduces inventory requirements and ensures cost savings for the end user.
Positioners ensure that the valve actuator is brought into a position specified by the control system. They are often equipped with analog position feedback sensors whose feedback confirms that the position specification has been achieved. These position feedback signals are typically provided as 4 … 20 mA signals and reported back to the control system. Previously, a separate isolator module was required for the input and output signal. With the new HiC2422 module, these two functions can be used in one device.
On the control side, the module can be operated in either current sink or current source mode, which can be easily selected via DIP switches on the side of the module. This considerably extends the range of control systems with which the device can be used. The HiC2422 is the only configurable 2-channel module for AI and AO signals on the market, which means it can be used for various applications in the event of changes in the plant, providing customers with cost savings and investment security.
The 12.5 mm slim module with two channels is extremely compact with a packing density of 6 mm/channel and saves valuable space in the control cabinet. Due to its global certifications (ATEX, IECEx, UL), the HiC2422 can be used worldwide at ambient temperatures of -40 °C ... +70 °C. Certified up to SIL 2 (SC 3) according to IEC/EN 61508, it is suitable for safety applications in accordance with SIL 2, and even up to SIL 3 when used redundantly.
As part of our H-System platform, the HIC2422 mounts on a termination board assembly, with many options for connectivity to a variety of control systems. Equivalent devices are also available in the K-System portfolio, which is a DIN rail-mounted solution. These are the KCD2-SCS-Ex2 as an isolated barrier for intrinsically safe signals and the KCD2-SCS-2 for signals to or from the non-hazardous area.
