Steadier and higher wind speeds enable offshore wind power plants to produce around twice as much power as comparable onshore plants. This involves a wide range of measuring and positioning applications that are solved by electrical components. Speed measurement of wind turbine generators is one of the standard applications in this industry.
Speed measurement is mandatory for safe and efficient operation of wind turbines. Due to harsh offshore conditions, however, components must be appropriately rugged, corrosion-resistant, and able to provide reliable measurement values even in extreme temperatures.
Application-specific incremental rotary encoders are an ideal solution. A special coating makes the stainless steel enclosures highly corrosion-resistant—they can withstand a 620-hour salt spray test. The temperature range was extended to -40 °C … 70 °C.
The special enclosure increases process stability, protects investments, and prevents expensive offshore maintenance and replacement work. Additionally, the rotary encoders feature a special insulating sleeve that protects them from cross currents and ensures signal quality. Application-specific customization of the current drivers expands the range of applications in offshore wind power plants.
